See below our list of employment law changes, reminder and actions for April 2023…
From 1 April, the National Minimum Wage rates have changed to:
National Living Wage (23+) | £10.42
21-22 Year Old | £10.18
18-20 Year Old | £7.49
16-17 Year Old | £5.28
Apprentice | £5.28
Employers need to ensure that these changes are reflected in their payroll and must ensure that all staff are getting paid the correct rate for their age. Failure to pay staff at least minimum wage will leave employers vulnerable to financial penalties of up to £20,000 per worker which will be costly for their business. Check out the GOV.UK website here to find out more.
From 2 April, statutory maternity (SMP), paternity (SPP), adoption (SAP), parental bereavement (SPBP) and shared parental pay (ShPP) increased from £156.66 to £172.48 per week.
From 6 April¸ statutory sick pay (SSP) increased from £99.35 to £109.40 per week.
The minimum amount an individual must earn to be entitled to these statutory payments remains at £123 per week.
From 6 April, the maximum amount of statutory redundancy compensation in England and Wales has risen to £643 per week. Employees that are made redundant after at least 2 years’ service in an organisation must be paid based on their age, weekly salary and length of service.
On Monday 8 May, there is to be an additional bank holiday following King Charles III coronation. Employers will need to include this additional day in their employees holiday entitlement.

You have made the process of taking on my first employee much easier. It was reassuring to have someone to advise on recruitment and the contracts and policies required."
